What's The Big Idea

Did Vera Wang Just Spell the End of the White Wedding Dress? What's the Big Idea?

Vera Wang Fall 2012 black wedding gown

The Fall 2012 bridal runway shows have debuted, and there was a big surprise at Vera Wang - the influential designer had not a single white or ivory wedding gown in her show. Instead she showed bridal silhouettes in colors like caramel, tea stain brown, and black. Yep, black - forget the old taboo about brides in black; at Vera Wang, brides were seen wearing all black gowns.

Considering the massive influence that Wang has on American wedding fashion, will the absence of white and ivory wedding gowns in her new collection spell the end of the custom popularized by Queen Victoria over 170 years ago? The answer is ultimately up to the consumer. If American brides flock to Vera Wang for her non-white dresses, other designers will be sure to follow suit with noir bridal gowns of their own. On the other hand, a black wedding dress might just be a bit too daring to play well in the Heartland of America. Time will tell...
